Saweetie is ready to be a “fashion girl.”
The 27-year-old rapper, singer, and songwriter has been making a name for herself in music, topping the charts with hits like “My Type,” “Tap In,” and “Best Friend.” The video for the latter has racked up more than 105 million views on YouTube and even inspired a photo shoot and TikTok video with 2000s icon Paris Hilton, in which the two cruise around Beverly Hills in cotton candy-hued velour sweatsuits and have the ultimate girls’ day.
Now, however, Saweetie is setting her sights on fashion through a new collaboration with Quay.
“I’m the music girl,” Saweetie tells Bustle, “so shout out to Quay for positioning me to be that fashion girl.”
The collection with the sunglasses brand — which has previously teamed up with the likes of Jennifer Lopez and Chrissy Teigen — dropped April 14 and includes styles like “No Cap,” “Go Off,” and “Mad Cute,” all of which are inspired by Saweetie’s infectious energy. You’ll also find a full collection of sunglasses featuring designs from Quay’s new luxe range.
Saweetie’s favorite: the “Almost Ready,” a pair of black square-shaped sunnies with sleek gold trim. “I would wear these glasses when I’m almost ready or not ready,” she says. “But even with an all-black, sleek look — like some leather pants, a leather jacket, maybe a little graphic tee from Gallery Dept. with sleek bone-straight hair, some YSL boots, and a black Birkin — I’m set.”
Although the pandemic has caused many to revert to sweatpants and loungewear, it’s had the opposite effect on Saweetie, who’s been using the time to brush up on her fashion knowledge.
“I recently downloaded Vogue Runway just to see what’s hot and what’s new,” she says. “I like to know and have an education behind clothes besides just seeing them on Instagram or Twitter.”
A peek at her IG reveals her love for all things 2000s, from deconstructed denim to sports jerseys as tops. Here, Saweetie walks Bustle through the 2000s trends she can’t get enough of, no matter how controversial they might be (ahem, low-rise jeans).
“Oh of course, that top by Vivienne Westwood. Definitely iconic.”
“I would rock some low-rise jeans — with my thong peeking out.”
“A tube top with a cute little bikini under — I think that’s cute. Layering is important, like a thong with the low-rise jeans. Whatever floats your boat.”
“It was a dream come true — my childhood girl fantasy — to be in a Juicy Couture sweatsuit with the Paris Hilton. She was one of the first pioneers for making the Juicy Couture sweatsuit hot.”
“It’s really weird — I love trucker hats … They make me feel sexy. I don’t know why, because they’re a trucker hat, but I’ve always felt sexy when I have [one] on.”
